The appointment was done by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries. The European Union has been notified of this appointment and registered SINTEF as Notified Body #1278.
As a Notified Body, SINTEF's competence and impartiality is controlled by the Norwegian Railway Authority (Statens jernbanetilsyn, SJT). SINTEF has over the years performed a large number of NoBo certification projects, both on-board and trackside, with respect to the TSIs "Control, Command and Signalling" (CCS), "Safety in Railway Tunnels" (SRT) and "Persons with Reduced Mobility" (PRM).
As a Notified Body, SINTEF is actively participating in the work of the NB-Rail Coordination and Association groups, both on the Plenary and on the subgroup (ERTMS) levels, together with other NoBos as well as the European Railway Agency (ERA).
According to ISO 17065:2012, SINTEF will make available upon request, the following:
- information about the certification scheme(s), including evaluation procedures, rules and procedures for granting, for maintaining, for extending or reducing the scope of, for suspending, for withdrawing or for refusing certification;
- a description of the means by which the certification body obtains financial support and general information on the fees charged to applicants and to clients;
- a description of the rights and duties of applicants and clients, including requirements, restrictions or limitations on the use of the certification body's name and certification mark and on the ways of referring to the certification granted;
- information about procedures for handling complaints and appeals.
