Silicon

Silicon is the second most abundant chemical element in the earth's crust and is applied in a large variety of applications ranging from fine chemical industry, alloying element in aluminum and steel to semiconductor in electronics and solar cells.

Norwegian industry has a leading position in the production of metallurgical grade silicon, and has established a strong position along the value chain for its utilization of solar energy, semiconductor and chemical industry. Within silicon related research and development SINTEF collaborates closely with other partners in the Norwegian Research Centre on Solar Cell technology, the Norwegian Micro- and Nanofabrication Facility (NORFAB) and the Norwegian Ferro Alloy Foundation (FFF).
