BioBIVE - Biodegradable delivery systems for plant pathogens control of horticultural crops through bioactive agents

BioBIVE has a goal to develop bio-based and bioactive delivery systems to control fungal plant pathogens of different horticultural crops decreasing fossil-based materials and pesticide use, minimizing environmental footprint.

In BioBIVE, different bioactive agents (basic substances, seaweed extracts and microorganisms) will be incorporated into several types of delivery systems (biochar, biodegradable mulch film, biodegradable sprayable mulch film) to improve crop yield and health of selected horticultural crops (tomatoes, carrots, strawberries), which have been chosen based on key socio-economic aspects. The intended results are innovative, sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural solutions. The efficiency of the delivery systems will be tested in real-life case studies at TRL 5-6 on the three different crops in pot, greenhouse and field trials. Together with these technical innovations, BioBIVE will be supported by the EC SSbD framework to ensure safety and sustainability of the bio-based materials and bioactive agents along their life cycle.

SINTEF will supply extracts from different seaweed species, evaluate their antifungal potential, contribute with encapsulation of the active substances and study how these can be released in a controlled manner, perform advanced analytics on bioactive substances, produce beneficial microorganisms for plant trials, collaborate with partners on finding the best strategies for incorporating the bioactive substances into the selected delivery systems, study the effect of applying the bioactive delivery systems on the soil microbiome amongst others.
