ELinGO - Electrification of heavy freight transport

The project is finished. Most of the reports are in English and are available here.

Norway has set the ambition to become climate neutral by 2050

In order to achieve this goal, all modes of transport need to become as climate efficient as possible. Freight transport is decisive for business to thrive, but generates large emissions of greenhouse gases. Norwegian freight transport is expected to increase by 65% by 2050, in parallel with the target of climate neutrality. This is why it is important to work for the electrification of freight transport. This can be done with pantographs above the vehicles, a rail under them or by inductive charging which can also be used by smaller vehicles.

In the R&D project ELinGO, we will do a concept analysis on the electrification of heavy freight transport. We will evaluate the three technologies mentioned above, and also analyse environmental consequences, organisational requirements and business model.

The main goal of the project is to contribute to the electrification of road freight transport which will enhance the competitiveness of Norwegian business and industry while emphasising sustainability and meeting low-emission goals.

The project started in 2016 and will continue until 2018. It has a budget of NOK 8 million, of which the Research Council of Norway contributes NOK 3 million. The project owner is the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, while SINTEF is responsible for the project management.
