The purpose of the Centres for Research-based Innovation (SFI) is to build up and strengthen Norwegian research groups that work in close collaboration with partners from innovative industry and innovative public enterprises.
The objective is to support long-term research that promotes innovation and the competitiveness of Norwegian industry. The SFI scheme is administered by the Research Council's Division for Innovation.
Located in Tromsø, Trondheim, Bergen and the Oslo area, the Norwegian Centres for Research-based Innovation (Norwegian: Sentre for forskningsdrevet innovasjon - abbreviated to SFI) are affiliated with some of Norway's top universities, research institutes and enterprises.
At present, there are 14 centres devoted to research-based innovation of a high international calibre within a range of areas.
The FACE SFI
FACE was initiated in August 2007 with the vision of combining surface and colloid chemistry with fluid mechanics to solve flow assurance challenges. Its objective is to deliver world class applied and fundamental research and education focused on production, transportation and separation of complex well fluids.
To achieve the FACE objective, a main goal was set: to develop generic methods to describe complex fluid systems in models that can be incorporated into scalable and robust multiphase flow assurance tools needed by the petroleum industry to develop new production solutions for oil and gas with complex fluids. The two terms generic methods and complex fluid systems basically define and focus the work carried out within FACE.
